How Many Pages Should Your eBook Be So That Customers Feel Like They Got Good Value For Their Money?

Last week someone sent me an e-mail asking me how long an eBook should be. I replied with a few questions, and received an interesting response. The real question was more along the lines of how many pages are minimally required so that a customer does not feel cheated. This is an excellent question because it goes to the heart of what being a successful eBook publisher is all about: providing your customers with fantastic value.

First let me dispel a myth that sees to circulate from time-to-time: there is no mathematical formula to determine how many pages an eBook should be. I can not help but laugh when people suggest that if you charge a certain amount of money, you need to have a certain amount of pages. While there's some truth to what is being said, it's fundamentally a myth.

I'd highly recommend that all of your eBooks, at a minimum, contain enough pages to convey the information that you are promoting to share with your customers. Really, think about that for a moment. Someone is buying your eBook for a reason. Are you providing the customer with what they're looking for? Do not worry about page counting. Just provide the customer what you promised them.

Now, if you feel like you need to "pad" your eBook to make it a bit more hefty, here's a strategy that I've seen used with some degree of success. If the topic of your eBook is weight loss, why not conduct a one-on-one interview with a weight loss expert? The transcript of this interview can be included in your eBook as a supplementary set of chapters. Not a bad idea, eh?

Here's the bottom line. Focus on providing value. Focus on giving the customer what you promised, irrespective of page count. Then, and only then, consider adding even more value (and pages) to your eBook by adding supplementary interview transcript chapters along the lines of what I just described in the previous paragraph.
